Hotel Royal

Iconic hotel in the heart of Aarhus

With the majestic cathedral on one side, the vibrant café culture along the river on the other, the charming Latin Quarter behind, and the bustling harbor ahead, one couldn’t ask for a better location than Hotel Royal. From its central address on Domkirketorvet in the heart of Aarhus, Hotel Royal has witnessed the world change for over 177 years.

Everything is new or carefully restored, while preserving the special atmosphere that still prevails in this historic hotel. Since its establishment in 1838, the hotel has hosted both the bourgeoisie and the royal figures and cultural personalities of the time. From Johanne Louise Heiberg and H.C. Andersen to Louis Armstrong, the hotel has welcomed a wide range of notable figures throughout its history. With the comprehensive restoration, which is the second under the current owner, Jens Richard Pedersen, who has owned the hotel since 1983, Hotel Royal Aarhus positions itself in the top class.

Paintings by famous artists

Go on a discovery journey

The art at Hotel Royal is very diverse, featuring paintings and lithographs by various artists, including Asger Jorn, Appel, Miro, Kandinsky and Nic. Petersen. There are also older genre paintings by Wennewald, Høyrup, and Friis Hansen. And of Åge Jensen, F. Madsen, Wennermoes, Alex Secher and Adolf Larsen. Among the newer artworks, there are several paintings by artists who are, or were, particularly good friends “of the hotel.” For example Jørgen Nash, his wife Lis Zwick, Teddy Sørensen, Tine Hind, Margit Enggaard Pedersen, Lene Noer, Axel Lind, Bent Holstein, Karl Johan Sennels, Hans Krull, and Per Kramer, among others.

There are exciting paintings by multi-talented artists who are both skilled painters and musicians, such as Johnny Madsen and Peter Viskinde. Lastly, we must not forget the Polish battle painter, Andrzej Kowalczyk, and his many battle scene and ceiling paintings. Kowalczyk has also completed paintings for the stairwell. They depict scenes from the inauguration of Aarhus Cathedral, the establishment of the Cathedral School in 1520, and culminate with a panorama painting of the city of Aarhus. On the walls of the hotel’s floors, there are paintings of Queen Margrethe, her father, and grandfather – indeed, the entire line of kings dating back to Gorm the Old, a total of 53 monarchs – also painted by Kowalczyk. Art has come to stay at Hotel Royal.
